New Requirements
From 1 October 2026, individuals appointed to a NSW strata committee will be required to complete a free online training course within 3 months of being appointed.
The training course will:
- Be completed online at your own pace
- Take approximately 1 hour to complete
- Cover key strata topics, including budgeting, maintenance responsibilities, repairs, and common strata issues
If the training is not completed within 3 months of their appointment, the individual will automatically cease to be a committee member.
Training Exemptions
Committee members appointed before 1 October 2026 are not required to complete the training unless they are reappointed after that date.
The mandatory training requirement does not apply to:
- Committee members in 2-lot strata schemes
- Persons appointed to fill a temporary committee vacancy for less than 3 months
- Licensed strata managing agents serving as committee members
- Members of the Australian College of Strata Lawyers
However, the training will remain available to anyone interested in strengthening their understanding of strata governance and committee responsibilities.
Additional Change
Also effective from 1 October 2026, Owners Corporations in 2-lot strata schemes will no longer be required to complete annual strata reporting.
This change is intended to reduce administrative obligations for smaller schemes while maintaining the broader reporting framework for larger strata communities.
For more information, visit the NSW Government website.
NSW Fair Trading is expected to release additional information and provide access to the training course closer to the commencement date.
If you have any questions about these changes and how they may affect your scheme, please contact your Strata Manager.
