Your Seasonal Maintenance Reminder: Spring

Our mornings are still cold, but the days are getting nicer. Be ready for your spring clean!

1. Check For Mould

Mould often occurs because of condensation. It usually appears on the surface of external walls, corners of poorly ventilated spaces such as cupboards and wardrobes. Areas such as laundries and bathrooms are prone to mould. Be sure to check in the corners of your ceilings, walls, and floors for mould.

In many cases, household detergent or white vinegar will be sufficient to clean the surface. White vinegar is also effective to prevent mould from returning however, finding the root cause of the mould is ideal for a permanent solution. Most often, the area requires more ventilation. Be sure to open a window, have an additional exhaust fan, or a regular wipe down to remove excesses moisture on the surface.

2. Clean Your Fridge Coils

If you notice frost or ice build upon your evaporator coil during operation, it is a sign that the coil is dirty and needs to be cleaned. A dirty condenser coil may affect the performance of your fridge, but you can easily clean it using a vacuum or long brush.

Each fridge is different, but here is a brief explanation of the coils in a fridge:

  • Condenser Coil: Located outside the fridge and are responsible for dispersing the heat which is absorbed by the refrigerant in the refrigerator.
  • Evaporator Coils: Located inside the fridge and are responsible for cooling the air inside.

3. Undertake Pest Control

With the rise in temperature, pests become active again. Spraying pests in early spring allows you to destroy the nests when their numbers are low.

Research and engage in pest control methods if you notice spiderwebs or ants around your home. There are humane ways to mitigate pests around your home, or you can engage in extermination.

If you are looking towards extermination, be sure too:

  • Clean your home before the treatment
  • Keep children and pets away from the treatment areas until dry
  • Remove clothes of clothing lines
  • Move loose items (toys, bikes, edible plants, pet water and food bowls) away from exterior walls.

4. Clear & Clean Your Vents

Regular cleaning of the pads and filter in your evaporative cooling system will help encourage optimal efficiency. If you covered your ceiling vent earlier in the year, remember to remove the vents, clean the filter and cooler pads, and turn the water to the cooler back on.

4. Clean Your Dryer

It’s likely you used your dryer a lot in winter, and it does not take long for it to fill up with dust and lint and even pose a fire hazard. Cleaning your dryer and vent can help keep drying times shorter, and clothes in good shape.

*Depending on your development, depends on whether some of these may be your responsibility, or the responsibility of the Owners Corporation. Please ensure any repairs undertaken are approved, if needed, and licensed trades are used.
