How to get to know your neighbours

Striking up a relationship with your neighbours isn’t always easy, but it can really help you, and them, to feel more at home in your area.

When you’re a tenant, it can sometimes be hard to get to know your neighbours. If you’ve only just moved in, or if the property next door has changed occupants, you’ll probably want to put in the effort, especially if a strong community feel is important to you.

It’s always good to start the relationship off on the right foot, so don’t be afraid to go over to your neighbours with a small gift – when they are new to the neighborhood, some homemade baking will certainly help.

Many communities now have dedicated social media pages to help residents connect, so don’t be afraid to reach out to your new neighbours online as well as in person. No group in your area? Maybe it’s time to set one up!

If you’re new to the area, make sure to also think through a few questions you might have for your neighbour. Asking about local schools or great restaurants can make sure you have plenty to speak to them about, and can help you get an insider’s guide to the area.

Once you’re settled, keep up the contact with your neighbours. If you don’t have a lawnmower yet, ask to borrow theirs in exchange for your other equipment – it’s a small trade, but can help you stay in touch with the community and save you a few dollars at the same time.
