How to make your rental feel like home

Just because you’re renting doesn’t mean you can’t bring your own creativity to a space. Here’s some ideas to get you started.

As a renter, the last thing you want is to feel like your rental is more hotel room than cosy home. Just because your name’s on a tenancy agreement rather than a mortgage doesn’t mean you can’t take a few steps to bring a bit of your own personality to a property.

Start with a few photos

Even in an age of Instagram and digital photographs, there’s something to be said for having your printed photos out on display. Adding picture hooks to the walls will require the landlord’s permission, so make sure to ask first.

Even if your property didn’t come with any hooks in the walls to hang frames from, you can add framed photos to side tables and smaller spaces to bring a touch of personality to your home.

Add a few soft furnishings

There’s plenty of ways you can add a bit of personality and colour to a property to give it your own stamp, without spending a fortune. A few bright cushions in your living room, some bold coloured towels in the bathroom, and soon the space will feel like an area that you’ve been able to make your own.

Potted colour

Even in Canberra’s winter months it’s worth thinking about how you can use your green thumb to give some personality to your rental.

A few pot plants will do the trick; start with indoor spaces like the kitchen and bathroom now, and then you can always add more to your outside spaces once the weather gets a little warmer. Just make sure you’re using the right pots; an indoor planter will have to be water-tight so it doesn’t leak when you water it.
